At the break of dawn, young Scindians wake up to the sound
of the bugle. Washed and scrubbed, they head towards the grounds to kick out the
laziness and start their day. After the morning fitness programme, with the ironed
shirt tucked in their grey trousers and polished shoes, they head to the dining
hall for a sumptuous breakfast.
A short walk takes them to the impressive Seksaria Hall
where the entire student body attends the morning assembly along with the
faculty. The assembly which is conducted by the Principal sets the tone for the
day. Thereafter, these young scholars attend their classes, absorbing theorems
and theories, work their hands on practicals, and put their minds to learning
languages and Sciences. The genius minds work to discover their inner creative
potential and widen the horizons of their knowledge.
They enjoy their mid-morning short break out in the open with
some snacks they fondly call ‘Nihari’. During lunch hours, they are served a
wholesome meal in the Central Dining Hall which comprises popular cuisines, great
in taste and variety. The students then return to their dormitory for a short
break.
Late afternoon is filled with the cheerful voices of these young
students, whistling while changing into their sportsgear. This is the time these
young Scindians indulge in sports activities and invigorate their physical and mental
self.
As the sun goes down, the boys move to the amphitheater, ‘The
Astachal’ known for its serene and calm surroundings with the imposing statue
of Mahatma Gandhi standing tall against the sky. They observe five minutes of silent
introspection while absorbing this divine experience which defies all
description, and stays with every Scindian for the rest of his life.
Astachal is followed by the Evening Prep where the Scindians
return to their books before dinner. Once, done with dinner, which lasts about an
hour followed by leisure-time, where they play indoor games, tune into music
and watch television in their common rooms.
Then, is an hour and a half of the Night Prep followed by a
good night’s sleep in the beautiful ambience of the Gwalior Fort.
Saturday nights may catch the young boys enjoying a movie in
the Shukla Memorial Open Air Theater or in the Assembly Hall, and Sundays are a
time for leisure, sports and long walks across unexplored paths. The range of
activities in The Scindia School are vast and varied and add to the overall
experience there.
